Is Money The Root Of All Evil?

In these days of economic meltdown by many banks and financial institutions the world over, I ask is money really the root of all evil, or is it simply the pursuit of it, or maybe like the bible says that it’s the “Love” of money that’s the real root of all evil.

From ancient times, man has needed money, in one form or another, a simple currency to buy his daily bread with. It didn’t matter in those early days whether it was simply a bartering system trade off, my goods or labour for yours, to a portion of salt (a precious commodity in ancient Roman times). Gold, silver and beautiful stones all had a perceived value, indeed as they still do today amongst most civilized societies. Remember our playground years when glass marbles, steelies or a stick of gum were our currency. Then later at college, it was a six pack, or cigarettes that became our bargaining allies. So when did this pursuit of money and riches become the bane of modern day society. When exactly did we turn that corner and become obsessed with this so called root of all evil?

We, that is, modern man, turned that corner when he realised that possessing more and more money (accumulated wealth), more gold than his neighbour, more land than anyone else, more cattle etc, are you seeing the picture immerging yet. We as modern man developed greed, and it was this greed and avarice that drove his passion for wealth. People who had wealth could buy anything, say and do anything, marry the most beautiful women in town, so it was inevitable that eventually with their wealth, along came power.

There’s an old adage that says “money talks” this is so true. If you have enough money and wealth, you have the power to change the world, or at least that part of the world in which you live. With power and wealth you can influence a government, have your own militia, and control other people’s lives. With unlimited power comes corruption, because money can buy just about anything, and the circle becomes complete.

Look at America today, who actually runs it? It’s not the government that’s for certain, no it’s the most powerful and wealthy amongst you. The wealthiest families and the wealthiest corporations, they pull the strings and hold the power to change every-ones lives. They alone hold the key to every-ones future, be it for good or bad.

In Conclusion

In reality it’s not money that’s the root of all evil, nor is it the “Love” of money like the bible says. The true root of all evil is MAN and his infinite ability to con and cheat his way to achieving ultimate wealth and power over others, often through inflicting suffering and misery. The present collapses of many of the Worlds Financial Institutions was brought about by the greed of a few.

This article is my own personal view only, through media observations, and international news reports, I have no insights into the exact workings of any financial institution, nor have I any political drum to beat.
